St Michael’s Retail Park - illuminated signs

Totem sign St Michaels retail park

The St Michael's Retail Park illuminated advertising totems are being left on all night, disturbing nearby residents. The totems however only have planning permission to be illuminated during the hours of business.

Lib Dem councillor Ron Hussey discussed this with the site owners and they've agreed to fit "timers" to switch off the lights automatically when the shops close, currently 10:30 pm.

However, the site owners have recently submitted a planning application (reference number 18/03646/FUL) to change one of the empty units from retail to leisure, for the gym group, a 24 hours' a day, 7 days a week gym.

So, we've written to the planning officers asking for the "totem" conditions to be amended, otherwise, with the proposed gym being open 24 hours a day, the lights could be back on again all night!

The totems seem over bright, so we've also asked the Council's Environmental team to check that the light intensity is within the agreed limits.
