Basingstoke LibDem prospective parliamentary candidate
Richard Whelan has been selected as the prospective Parliamentary candidate for Basingstoke. Richard studied politics and international affairs and worked alongside both MPs and those in local government. Being disabled since birth has not stopped Richard campaigning on a number issues including policy development work with a disability charity and how personal care can support independent living.
Setting out his priorities for the campaign, Richard said "I am looking forward to meeting as many people as possible between now and whenever the election is called. It is clear that Basingstoke needs a different voice in parliament. Our NHS needs fixing, and we can't allow the environment and climate change to be pushed off the agenda by the other parties. We also need to rethink politics. This parliament has produced the most scandals and least solutions. The public deserve better"
Welcoming the selection, Cllr Gavin James said "Richard's personal experience of the NHS and care system make him a great campaigner. His knowledge of policy development and international affairs will make him a great addition to the House of Commons. He will be a strong voice for Basingtoke."
