London's Liberal Democrat MEP Sarah Ludford is backing her colleague Diana Wallis MEP who is raising money and awareness of endometriosis by running the London Marathon this weekend.
Endometriosis is a condition which can affect 1 in 10 women in which cells from the lining of the womb grow in other parts of the body. Symptoms can be very painful and can include damage to fertility and susceptibility to develop other diseases such as cancer. There is at present no cure, and diagnosis can be poor.
In 2004 Sarah Ludford backed a European Parliament call for the inclusion of endometriosis prevention in future EU action programmes for public health to enable more research into the causes, prevention and treatment of the condition. She said:
"I'm delighted to support my Liberal Democrat colleague Diana in her London Marathon run this weekend and I wish her the best of luck in meeting her £20,000 target towards research and early diagnosis of endometriosis. Frankly it is astonishing that a condition of such severity that can affect 10% of women gets so little attention."
"I will continue to support calls for increased funding and research into the prevention and cure of endometriosis so that millions of women can get on with their lives and feel safe in the knowledge that good work is being done to tackle the condition."
