MEPs demand EU role in protecting whales

MEPs have called for the current moratorium on commercial whaling to be upheld by the international community, for a ban on international trade in whale products, the elimination of whaling for scientific purposes and the creation of marine sanctuaries where whales receive special protection.

The report adopted by the European Parliament also calls on the European Commission to bring forward proposals to strengthen protection of whales from threats caused by shipping, such as collisions, fishing gear and noise.

Liberal Democrat MEP for London Sarah Ludford said:

"MEPs are right to insist on addressing the issue of whale conservation comprehensively through international agreement. It is vital that the EU plays a constructive role in such negotiations. Without this the populations of this magnificent creature will continue to be at risk, both immediately and in the long term".

"The report respects the needs of communities that traditionally engage in whaling for their sustenance, but demands quotas and controls and more humane killing methods. But what should not be tolerated is the practice of hiding commercial whaling under a spurious cloak of 'scientific research'."
